Dr. Stephen Snelders studied history at the Utrecht University, where he majored in economical and social history. In 1994 he began his graduate research at the Vrije Universiteit, studying the use of LSD and other hallucinogenic substances in the Netherlands. He finished in 1999. From 2002 to 2012 Stephen worked as a medical historian at the department Metamedica at the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam. He published on a wide variety of topics: the historical and societal impact of the concept of hereditary transmission in medicine and the public domain (genetics, eugenics) ; the use of psychoactive substances in medicine and the public domain; and the history of communication of medicine to the public in early modern and modern times. Since 2008 he is the editor of Studium, a journal for the history of science and the history of universities. Also, since 2012 he works at the Julius Center for Health Sciences at the UMC Utrecht. cheap ventolin Professor Virginia Berridge is Professor of History and Director of the Centre for History in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is an expert on the history of post-Second World War public health policy and in particular: smoking, illicit drugs and alcohol, the role of the media and the relationship between science and policy. Her most recent book is Marketing health. Smoking and the discourse of public health, 1945-c.2000 (Oxford University Press, 2007). She also co-authored two books: Environment Health and History (with M. Gorsky) (Palgrave, 2012) and Public Health in History (with M. Gorsky and A. Mold) (Open University Press, 2011). Virginia and her team have a long pedigree of delivering policy-relevant research. They have an ongoing programme of research and policy engagement funded by the Wellcome Trust and hold regular events that bring together historians, scientists and health policymakers. Virginia is regularly consulted by policymakers and has been involved in many initiatives on drugs and alcohol policy. The Department of Health recently appointed her to the Alcohol Education Research Council. She is a trustee of Alcohol Research UK and has been advising the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD). Professor David T. Courtwright received his Ph.D. from Rice University in, Houston, Texas, USA. He is known for his publications on drug use and drug policy in the American as well as world history, notably like Dark Paradise: A History of Opiate Addiction in America (2001) and Forces of Habit: Drugs and the Making of the Modern World (2002). He currently teaches these subjects at the history department of the University of North Florida, where he is Presidential Professor. Other topics of research include the special problems of frontier environments, both on the land in the air. In 2010 he released his published book No Right Turn: Conservative Politics in a Liberal America, a book about the culture war that has roiled disturbed American politics since the 1960s. Dr. Heidi Lesscher works at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. In 2004 dr. Lesscher graduated with her doctoral thesis Vulnerability for cocaine dependance. She then started working at the Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center, an alcohol research center established at the University of California San Francisco. Her current research focuses on neurobiological mechanisms and genetic vulnerability with regards to alcoholism. Alcoholism is a complex brain disease that is for fifty to sixty percent genetically determined. This research looks at molecular mechanisms in the amygdala, where specific genes can influence the transition from moderate to excessive alcohol consumption. Insight in these mechanisms can lead to the development of new medication for the treatment of alcoholism. Dr. Thomas Gladwin is an experimental psychologist, with a background in various aspects of cognitive neuroscience. He is currently working as a post-doc at the lab of Reinout Wiers at the University of Amsterdam. His research concerns cognitive neuroscientific models of addiction and their translation to clinical interventions. Sprekers avondprogramma Dr. Stephen Snelders (1963) studeerde geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Utrecht, met als hoofdvak economische en sociale geschiedenis. In 1994 begon hij een promotie-onderzoek aan de Vrije Universiteit naar het gebruik van LSD en andere hallucinogene stoffen in Nederland, waarop hij promoveerde in 1999. Van 2002 tot 2010 werkte Stephen als medisch historicus aan de afdeling Metamedica van het VU Medisch Centrum in Amsterdam. Hij deed onderzoek naar en publiceerde over een aantal uiteenlopende thema’s: de historische en maatschappelijke implicaties van het gebruik van erfelijkheidsconcepten in de geneeskunde en het publieke domein (genetica, eugenetica); het gebruik van psychoactieve stoffen in geneeskunde en het publieke domein; en de geschiedenis van medische publiekscommunicatie in de vroegmoderne en moderne tijd. Sinds 2008 is hij redacteur van Studium, tijdschrift voor wetenschaps- en universiteitsgeschiedenis. Tevens is hij vanaf 2012 werkzaam bij het Julius Centrum voor Gezondheidswetenschappen aan het UMC Utrecht. Prof.dr. Louk Vanderschuren studeerde medische biologie aan de Universiteit Utrecht en promoveerde in 1994 aldaar op onderzoek naar de rol van lichaamseigen opiaten ('endorfine') bij sociaal gedrag van ratten. Hierna verrichtte hij aan de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam en de Universiteit van Cambridge onderzoek aan mechanismen in de hersenen die ten grondslag liggen aan drugsverslaving. Sinds 2004 is hij verbonden aan het Rudolf Magnus Instituut voor Neurowetenschappen van het UMC Utrecht. Sinds 2010 is hij hoogleraar Neurobiologie van Gedrag bij de faculteit Diergeneeskunde van de Universiteit Utrecht, waar hij wetenschappelijk onderzoek doet naar de rol van de hersenen bij drugsverslaving, sociaal gedrag en impulsiviteit. Hij heeft 83 artikelen gepubliceerd in internationale wetenschappelijke tijdschriften. Hij is redacteur van het tijdschrift Behavioural Pharmacology en sinds 2005 bestuurslid van de European Behavioural Pharmacology Society. Drs. Yolanda van Doeveren studeerde psychologie aan de Universiteit Leiden en volgde de Europese Comenius Leergang aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Sinds 2006 is Van Doeveren manager OGGZ en Verslavingszorg bij de GG&GD van de gemeente Utrecht, waar zij verantwoordelijk is voor het beleid en uitvoering van de opvang van dak- en thuislozen, verslavingszorg, openbare geestelijke gezondheidszorg en het prostitutiebeleid. Van Doeveren is verder programmamanager van Utrecht voor het Plan van Aanpak Maatschappelijke Opvang G4-Rijksoverheid. In 2010 werd dit plan uitgeroepen tot een van de ketenkampioenen door ‘Ketens & Netwerken’, een platform over kennisdelen en samenwerken met ICT. Prof. dr. Jelle Reumer studeerde biologie met als specialisatie paleontologie en promoveerde in 1983 op een proefschrift over fossiele spitsmuizen. Hij werkte van 1984 tot 1986 bij de Université de Genève aan de taxonomie van de Afrikaanse klauwkikkers. Sinds december 1987 is hij directeur van het Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam dat onder zijn leiding een spectaculaire metamorfose heeft ondergaan: van een treurig en weinig in het oog springend museum in Blijdorp tot een dynamisch museum op een culturele toplocatie. In februari 2005 is hij benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar Vertebratenpaleontologie aan de faculteit Geowetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht. Jelle Reumer is vooral geboeid door evolutie en ecologie, en de wisselwerking tussen die twee, waardoor het leven zich in al zijn diversiteit heeft kunnen ontwikkelen. Paleontologie is daarvoor volgens Reumer een bij uitstek geschikte wetenschap, omdat het de ontwikkeling van het leven registreert en interpreteert. Een indrukwekkend aantal populairwetenschappelijke artikelen staat op Reumers naam, net als een aantal recent uitgebrachte boeken: De ontplofte aap (2005), Opgeraapt Opgevist Uitgehakt (2008), Een prachtige puinhoop (2009) en De mierenmens (2011). Zijn colleges voor Studium Generale over de evolutie van de gewervelden zijn verschenen als 4CD-box bij NRC Academie onder de titel Het ontstaan van dier en mens (2012). |
