Pictures Afternoon program Chair: Floris Cohen Descartes was, and is, many things to many people. He is known as ‘the first modern philosopher’, but traces of scholasticism have also been noticed in his work. A devout Roman Catholic who sought to prove God’s existence, he has also been claimed for the Enlightenment. He is most often taken for a rationalist, but some of his investigations look decidedly empiricist. He made much of the ‘certainty’ of his conclusions, with mathematics for prime example; but his search for mathematical exactitude and certainty ended in the production of a heuristically useful toolbox. Five distinguished experts will take on these seemingly opposite personae, all going by the name of Descartes.
