On 17 March 2010 we will re-launch the Centre for History of Science at Ghent University with a lecture by Stephen Gaukroger: The Emergence and Consolidation of a Scientific Culture.
Stephen Gaukroger is Professor of History of Philosophy and History of Science at the University of Sydney. He is currently President of the International Society for Intellectual History, editor of the Springer series Studies in the History and Philosophy of Science, and co-editor of the journal Intellectual History Review. He is the author of several monographs on early modern philosophy and science, including Descartes' System of Natural Philosophy (Cambridge University Press, 2002), Francis Bacon and the Transformation of Early-Modern Philosophy (Cambridge University Press, 2001), Descartes: An Intellectual Biography (Oxford University Press, 1995); and currently at work on a multi-volume project on the emergence and consolidation of a scientific culture in the West. The first volume of this long-term project appeared in 2006 under the title The Emergence of a Scientific Culture: Science and the Shaping of Modernity, 1210-1685 (Oxford University Press).
The lecture will take place on 17 March at 4 pm in Het Pand (Ghent University's conference center, address: Onderbergen 2). The lecture will be preceded by an opening speech of Professor Freddy Mortier, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of Ghent University. It will be followed by a drinks reception.
Attendance is open to all without charge. However there is a limit on places available, and anyone wishing to attend must register with Manuel Mertens (Manuel.Mertens@UGent.be) by 3 March 2010.
