Abstract
The concept of natural magic (magia naturalis) was essential for medicine and (natural) science in the early modern period. Especially “imagination” and “magnetism” should explain pathogenic and therapeutic processes in medicine. The paper will consider the doctrine of Paracelsus and its modifications by Johan Baptist van Helmont, the most important Paracelsian scholar of the 17th century. The impact of natural magic can be shown by the illustrious paradigm of van Helmont’s “weapon salve” (Waffensalbe). He refuted the assumptions of the Jesuits supposing “devil’s work”. There are interesting links to animal magnetism (mesmerism) and the theory of suggestion about two or three hundred years later.
