Belangstellenden worden uitgenodigd vóór 1 augustus 2013 een voorstel van maximaal 500 woorden in te dienen. De spreektijd zal ongeveer een half uur zijn. De bijdragen zullen worden gebundeld tot een boek. |
| The PhD project is embedded in the Descartes Centre, an interdisciplinary collaboration supported and financed by all faculties at Utrecht University. The Centre coordinates the research in the field of history and philosophy of the sciences and humanities at Utrecht University, organizes symposia, congresses, and seminars, and offers a MSc program and fellowships. The PhD candidate needs to choose his or her supervisor from the members of the Centre. |
| Candidates are asked to apply on the basis of their own research proposal, which should be situated within one of the following sub-disciplines of (analytic) philosophy: epistemology, the philosophy of biology, and meta-ethics. During the first year, relevant literature will be studied and the research proposal will be further developed. During the remaining 2,5 years, a dissertation and two articles for an A or B journal will be written. Some teaching will be involved (not more than one seminar a year), and the PhD student will be the convenor of the Dutch Research Seminar for Analytic Philosophy, which meets once a month in Utrecht. At least once a month there will be a tutorial with the supervisor (Professor Herman Philipse).

Als lid van het Descartes Centre heeft prof. dr. Toine Pieters een grote onderzoeksubsidie in de wacht gesleept binnen het nieuwe onderzoeksprogramma ‘Topsector Creatieve Industrie' van NWO. Doel van het programma Creatieve Industrie is om wetenschappelijke kennis toegankelijk te maken voor de creatieve industrie, nieuwe kennis te ontwikkelen en verbindingen tot stand te brengen tussen wetenschap en praktijk. Het gaat om het project ‘Time Capsule’: digitale erfgoedgegevens toegankelijk en toepasbaar maken. Met behulp van geavanceerd ICT-technologie beoogt ‘Time Capsule’ digitale databanken voor erfgoedgegevens op verschillende locaties te koppelen en gegevens te laten uitwisselen . Intensieve samenwerking tussen historici, taalkundigen, farmaceuten, biologen en informatici biedt nieuwe mogelijkheden om digitale erfgoedgegevens op het gebied van plantaardige geneesmiddelen beschikbaar te maken voor universiteit, bedrijfsleven en het grote publiek. De technologische infrastructuur van het platform beoogt generiek te zijn om daarmee in brede zin erfgoed gegevens te ontsluiten. De ambitie is om een nieuwe standaard te bieden om ons erfgoed duurzaam te presenteren en te gebruiken in het digitale tijdperk.

Op de website van het genootschap Gewina zijn nu de volledige jaargangen van de Nieuwsbrief Universiteitsgeschiedenis (1995-2007) en Batavia Academica (1983-1993) te downloaden als PDF-bestand. De Nieuwsbrief was een gemeenschappelijke publicatie van de Belgische vereniging Studium generale en van de Nederlandse Werkgroep Universiteitsgeschiedenis. De Nederlandse voorganger ervan was Batavia Academica, dat qua vorm het midden hield tussen een nieuwsbrief en een regulier wetenschappelijk tijdschrift.

Tien masterprogramma's van de Universiteit Utrecht zijn als beste beoordeeld ten opzichte van vergelijkbare programma's aan andere Nederlandse universiteiten. Dat blijkt uit de Keuzegids Masters 2013 die op donderdag 18 april verscheen.

The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin
(Max Planck Research Group Art and Knowledge in Pre-Modern Europe; Director: Prof. Dr. Sven Dupré) announces three postdoctoral fellowships for up to three months between January 1 and December 31, 2014. Outstanding junior and senior scholars (including those on sabbatical leave from their home institutions) are invited to apply.

The Fondation Maison de Science de l’Homme and the Gerda Henkel Foundation offer two 12-month postdoctoral fellowships for researchers in the humanities who wish to carry out an individual research project within the international setting of the Collège d’études mondiales in Paris, to integrate and/or develop scientific international networks in France and to build long-term partnerships between their home institution and the French host institution. Applications from promising young scholars worldwide are welcome.
Research projects in the following fields are supported in particular:
Global History, Art History, History of Science, Islamic Studies, Philosophy.

| A Rubicon grant has been awarded to Federico D’Onofrio for his proposal “Peasant farms and agricultural policies: the history of a “paradigm of response”. The proposal builds on his recently defended thesis “Knowing to Transform: Three Ways for Agricultural Economists to Observe Italy 1900-1940” which he wrote as part of Harro Maas’s VIDI project “Observation in economics, historically considered”. Federico will spent his Rubicon years at Yale, NJ, in the Program for Agricultural Studies that is directed by the renowned political scientist and anthropologist James C. Scott (Seeing Like a State: How certain schemes to improve the human condition have failed (Yale, 1999); The Art of Not Being Governed: An anarchist history of upland South-East Asia (Yale, 2010) ) and in Brugg, Switzerland, in the archives of the Swiss turn of the 19th century agricultural researcher and activist Ernst Laur.
